Necessity: The mother of invention, or, of tonight’s dinner. Lots of the meals I make are driven by what do I have on hand at the moment. Maybe the dinner I imagined and planned and shopped for is losing it’s luster in my mind, or it’s the end of the week and I’ve cooked through my list, but dinner’s still got to be made for that night with whatever I have on hand….

This may have happened to you before (it has to me): It’s the end of long day, you’re tired and you walk to the fridge to see what’s for dinner. You’ve got a few random things, but no idea what to do with them. Too drained to think about what to make, you turn to that lone frozen meal tucked in the back of the freezer or dial-up your favorite Thai place….
Two weekends ago, small eats turned three! It’s crazy to believe that I’ve been blogging for three years and how different my life is on many levels. In blogger tradition, I made something sweet (and healthy) to commemorate the occasion. Sometimes, I can speak better through food. I’ve been doing it for years, but only recently have I really realized that it’s another language I’m pretty fluent in. All of the words and emotions I want to tell someone can so easily be channelled into a dish, a treat, a food gift. The happiness I’ve received from serving a meal, surprising someone with a treat or gifting anything from cookies to pickles to lasagna runs so deep. For me, good, nourishing food can do more than a card or regular birthday gift….
